Rare 19th century French solid kingwood ‘whatnot’

This rare 19th century French solid kingwood whatnot is certainly a work of cabinetmaker, leader of Japonism, Gabriel Viardot (1830-1904).

It is surmounted by a varnished polished bronze dragon that is frequently found in the cabinetmaker’s production.

The lower part also has shelves whose upright is decorated with a wrapped dragon in varnished polished bronze.

The faded two plank cleated top, above a shaped skirt, the front having a single, double fronted drawer retaining
the original turned handles and central brass escutcheon.

Resting on shaped turned legs with a circular pad foot, joined by a shaped X stretcher.

The well patinated three plank cleated top, above a narrow skirt, resting on rectangular chamfered legs, with octagonal moulded feet, joined by a rectangular moulded ‘H’ stretcher.
Great overall colour and patination.

Cleaned,lightened, highlighted and re wax finished.

Been some years since I’ve stocked one of these, this one in particular being the largest I have seen.
The large perfectly faded and patinated circular five plank folding top, on two rectangular upright supports, having an attractive lyre-shaped twisting central support, retaining the original steel guide attached below the top. Resting on bold long sledge-feet.
