RESTORATION: Late 19th Australian Blackwood folding library chair We just restored this late 19th Australian Blackwood folding library chair for a customer. The frame and seat were broken. Re-glued, wax filled damage lines, clean back surfaces, colour where necessary. Re french polish overall, cut back and wax finish. Waxed up so well.
RESTORATION – Not for sale Restoration of a 20th century retro rosewood sideboard. Five after photos, then three before. We couldn’t work out exactly what had been applied to the lacquered finish to make such a patchy mess. Heavily cleaned back, removing all damages and paint spots. Re french polish, colour damage during process, cut back and wax finish. Very happy customer!
RESTORATION – Not for sale Restoration of an unusual 19th century French Amboyna Burl cylinder-top writing desk Before and after photos. We had great pleasure in restoring this piece. Eddies perfect kingwood cross-banding, amboyna veneer and satinwood stringing inlay patching. My colouring and french polishing, Jack cut back and waxing. Very happy customers!
RESTORATION – Not for sale 20th century oak sideboard Fresh out of restoration from an unattractive chocolate colour with tiny steel handles to this. We rarely strip, but in this case nothing to save, so hand strip, no sanding, mix a bitumen based stain, re polish, cut back and built a wax finish.
RESTORATION – Not for sale A recent private restoration job. Beautiful last quarter 19th century French oak rotating desk chairThe last photo shows before restoration. Several patches and re carving, re gluing, removed the later varnished dark surface to reveal a very red raw oak. Refused to sand or bleach, made up a green base stain that removed much of the red, a very old trick. Re french polished, coloured in repairs, cut back and wax finished. Craig Howell, upholsterer, removed the original pressed leather seat and reupholstered the chair to finish this wonderful job. Eddie, cabinet maker, completed the repairs and carving. Also the ball bearings lubricated and running well.
Restoration of German Terrestrial Globe Taking apart, removing old glues, packing the interior for stability, re-glueing and holding glues together. Then watercoloring the damages out. Wonderful outcome.
Quick Restoration of a customers Dining Table I called into a customers last night with a few colours and waxes and cleaned up their table.
RESTORATION – Not for sale. We just finished restoring this fantastic set of 19th century English Country Regency dining chairs. A customer purchased them not realising that many users ago, someone had drilled holes through every leg and seat rail, tying a coat hanger style metal brace. Once removed, not easily, they were a complete mess! Eddie took each chair apart and rebuilt them. We cleaned back, filled the holes, disguised the repairs and refinished them. Cut back and waxed today and ready to deliver. I thought I’d share the process with you. Note: still to be reupholstered.
Recently restored: Beautiful first half 20th century American mahogany extension dining table We recently restored this beautiful first half 20th century American mahogany extension dining table for some of my favourite customers. It would have been easy to strip, sand and re finish. Would have cost substantially more and the dark red/brown mahogany colour would have returned. The overall fade is what’s so attractive re this table. The carriers delivers to our workshops. We cleaned back the surfaces, retaining the original finish (most important) Shane, very cleverly filled the deep gouge/scratch perfectly level, no damage to surrounding surface! Exceptional! Jack re french polished the table, during the processes, I coloured out the repair. Once completed, the table was cut back and wax finished, to soften the shine. Note: retaining the original fade and overall markings is most important. Very happy customers and looks magnificent back in place, alongside the matching English Regency mahogany sideboard, we restored at the same time. I’ll probably post that tomorrow…. Team work here, something we all enjoy… Thanks Jack & Shane
Intricate Restoration of 19th century Italian terracotta Amphora. We recently restored this 19th century Italian terracotta amphora. They rest on the 31st floor and a freak wind gust broke one into pieces. Here’s a few after and during photos of our work. The first photos were taken once back in place. Restoring is certainly our bread and butter when it comes to business income. Seeing the smile on a customers face when delivering a finished piece can be more rewarding than the payment… BTW, the views from this outstanding building are the best I’ve seen in Melbourne.
