This is a letter from Queen Victoria’s secretary to the coachbuilding firm of Stevenson & Elliot thanking them for a gift of a coach to the Queen.
Stevenson & Elliot was established in Stirling, Scotland and later opened branches in Calcutta and Melbourne. George Elliot migrated to Australia from Scotland around the time of the gold rush established the Melbourne business. The factory was in King Street and the showroom was at the corner of Latrobe and Swanston Streets.
